The coolest thing about this job is that every detail is important

Iris is a junior Interior Designer at De Klerk Binnenbouw. She knew early on that she wanted to be in this profession, especially after she came to do an internship at De Klerk Binnenbouw. “I love making a drawing that fits down to the last millimeter.”

She mainly makes the drawings digitally, in a 3D drawing package. Iris: “If you have never heard of this work, I sometimes make the comparison with The Sims, a computer game that used to be played a lot. But this 3D drawing work of course involves much more, very specific knowledge is needed to create these exclusive interiors. It is precisely using and applying that knowledge that makes the work so incredibly fun.”

“The coolest thing about this work is that really all the details are important,” says Iris. “Everything has to match the shape of the yacht, which is always different. You have to take crazy angles into account. In addition, 'quality over quantity' applies in luxury yacht building. The interior has to be finished perfectly and seamlessly. To get this done, you have to be working on this when you are drawing.”

For Iris, De Klerk Binnenbouw is the ideal employer to further develop herself: “There is no place where you can learn this trade better than here. Every millimeter counts and quality is the most important thing. That also means that you can't take anything for granted, all designs and ideas have to be checked. Often several solutions are possible, in complex cases the best solution is chosen in consultation with the lead engineer. Because of this, you can sometimes spend quite a while working on one building element, but when I finally see a sketch become reality, it gives me great satisfaction.”

“It's actually bizarre, the things we make here: we produce such beautiful interior parts. And because the production is at home, I get feedback on my work very quickly; I learn from that every time. I also like to come to the yard to see on the yacht how 'my' furniture is built in. It really is teamwork, from the architect to the furniture maker, we do it together. And when you see the result after a project, that's the best part!”
